Rockaway paramedics will get a GATOR
Posted on 21:08 by Unknown
From WPIX:
There was little question since Hurricane Sandy hit, beach access for paramedics and their ambulance was somewhat restricted this summer season.
It’s exactly why paramedics want a John Deere GATOR, a beach accessible vehicle, used in Coney Island for patient transport.
Instead, Rockaway paramedics would use what’s known as a SKED, a roll up pallet meant for mass casualty situations and hitch it to the axle of a Parks and Recreation ATV. That ATV, driven by a park employee, would then drag patients through the sand to get to an ambulance in the Rockaways. Concerns only grew when they learned the patient could also be taking in fumes during that ride.
“We carry CO meters and the CO meters at 35, they go ballistic. They go off. It measured at 980 parts per million so now you’re not only dragging the patient through the sand, you’re blowing CO on them for a block or two before you even get them to an ambulance,” said Israel Miranda, Union President representing EMS and Paramedics.
After complaints, petitions, and with PIX11′s help, it seems there was a change of heart and the Rockaways will be getting exactly what it needs.
The FDNY said after a review of the procedure the SKED policy will not be used. Instead, the Fire Commissioner instructed the Bureau of EMS to place one of the city’s GATORS in the Rockaways.

This guy was trusted with a chainsaw?
Posted on 21:30 by Unknown

From the NY Post:
A boneheaded tree trimmer climbed his way to the top of an overgrown maple in Queens yesterday, cutting limbs along the way — until he realized he had no way down.
Red-faced David Fleischer, 21, of Brooklyn, had to be rescued by Queens firefighters in a ladder truck.
“He is a good boy, but he is learning,” said the man’s dad, Yisroel “Izzy” Fleischer, who runs the family’s landscaping business, Kensington Gardens Handiworks.
Yisroel Fleisher said the company, based in upstate Monticello, was hired to trim two maple trees and a cherry tree at a business on Linden Boulevard and 225th Street in Cambria Heights before chopping them down to clear the area for new construction.
David Fleischer made it 40 feet up before realizing his predicament — and drawing a small crowd of giggling bystanders.
Council member suggests house party legislation
Posted on 21:05 by Unknown
From CBS New York:
It’s a proposal that could make Brooklyn a bit more mellow, a push to prevent large and unruly gatherings by forcing people to get permission to party.
Recently, a massive house party, hosting more than 200 people, took place in the borough and some residents told CBS 2’s Derricke Dennis they’re sick of it.
Parties like that one two Sundays ago are the focus of a new proposal from City Councilman Jumaane Williams, cracking down on what he calls advertised “house clubs,” where there’s a cover charge, drinks are being sold, and huge crowds are in attendance.
“We think when there’s 200-300 people in a backyard and this happens on a routine basis, you’re really inviting trouble,” Williams said.
The proposal would mean anyone hosting a party with 40 or more people invited would have to register the event with the police.
“All we said is we have to inform the precinct and inform the community aboard. You wouldn’t have to ask for approval. You wouldn’t have to ask for permission,” Williams said.
So is this added protection, or an infringement of rights? The answer remains to be seen.
Councilman Williams also wants to create fines for people who advertise their party on social media and charge for admission and drinks, Dennis reported.
Parties the size of what the council member is targeting belong at a place of assembly, which is inspected by FDNY and assigned an occupancy limit. From FDNY:
As a matter of public safety, New York City requires a Place of Assembly (PA) Certificate of Operation for all premises where the Certificate of Occupancy indicates that 75 or more members of the public may gather indoors or 200 or more may gather outdoors for religious, recreational, educational, political or social purposes, to consume food or drink, await transportation, or any similar group activities. When such groups gather, it is necessary to ensure that the space is safe and issues, such as proper egress and emergency lighting, are appropriately addressed.
The certificate of occupancy for a private house generally does not allow 40 or more people to be on premises at once. I would think that parties of the volume that the council member is trying to regulate are already technically illegal and there are agencies responsible for monitoring the issue other than NYPD, like FDNY and/or DOB. In addition, those advertising their parties on social media and charging for admission and drinks have now turned their residence into a business. That's already illegal and subject to DOB fines. Good luck getting any enforcement.

No one can seem to shut illegal site down
Posted on 21:13 by Unknown
From the Queens Courier:Neighbors on one Glendale block say the nearby garage is a chronic nuisance.
“These people are lawless all day, every day,” said one woman who wished to remain anonymous.
The garage, nestled on a quiet block in Glendale, sees dozens of cars every day. Neighbors complain the owners’ cars stay parked on the sidewalks and down the street for days, inconveniencing residents.
However, owners Elsie Serrano and Oscar Ortega claimed they are running a completely legal operation.
“I have receipts for everything I have done here,” Serrano said.
The shop’s license to sell cars is up to date, and both Serrano and Ortega are licensed to run their business.
However, neighbors allege they do not sell vehicles, but illegally repair them.
Ortega said his store brings cars to a nearby Getty station for service and if the station is too busy, he will do an oil change or fix brakes himself. He added that the store also legally washes cars. However, neighbors said they have seen workers do larger-scale repairs.
“They’re fixing collision and mechanical problems,” said Danny, a resident who withheld his last name. “You can smell chemicals along our block. These are people that have no morals, no respect.”
The owners frequently have their large family visit the site, and several neighbors said they blast music and intimidate residents at all hours of the day.
The 104th Precinct has paid many visits to the site, handing out numerous tickets and summonses. Neighbors said police officers have told workers to shut down the operation, though the 104th did not return calls for comment.
The Fire Department has allegedly shut the site down four times, but the shop continues to reopen. The woman said she has not seen any police or fire presence at the site since April.

Supposedly sealed building caught fire
Posted on 21:19 by Unknown
From the Queens Gazette:Fire marshals are looking into the cause of a stubborn, smoky fire on the afternoon of June 10 that destroyed a vacant home on 47th Street in Astoria, fire officials said.
Twenty-five fire units and 106 firefighters responded at about 4:30 p.m. to the two-alarm blaze at 31-40 47th Street that sent one firefighter to Mount Sinai Queens with burn injuries, a fire spokesperson said. Several other firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation and other injuries at the scene.
Fire marshals arrived at the scene a short while before the blaze was brought under control, to begin combing through the remains of the building to determine exactly what sparked the fire. Fire officials would not say if the blaze is considered suspicious.
I think I have the answer:

Transformer explosion at NY Times printing plant
Posted on 19:14 by Unknown
"At approximately 2:30 am, there appears to have been an electrical fire at the New York Times plant. Fire lit up the sky as cars drove along the neighboring Whitestone expressway. Several fire trucks were on the scene by 2:45 am. ... Can we find out more? Why did this happen? Lights dimmed in the nearby Mitchell Gardens buildings." - Anonymous #1"My next door neighbor said he heard a grinding noise around 2 a.m. which was followed by an electric explosion, as he described it. There was a lot of black smoke and flames. He called 911 and the operator didn't know where the NY Times printing plant was located! However, fire engines arrived a short time later and extinguished the flames, according to my source. I could see some damage to the building earlier today but it didn't look as bad as what was described to me. I observed there were a lot more vehicles parked near the front of the complex than usual. For a while, 2 fire trucks were parked out front as well. I just checked and the printing plant is lit up and I'm assuming they're spitting out Sunday's Times as we speak." - Anonymous #2
After a little bit of searching, here's what I came up with:
QNS ALL HANDS 25-70 WHITESTONE EXPWY W, COMMERCIAL (NY TIMES) TRANSFORMER FIRE WITH SLIGHT EXTENSION TO BUILDING, UNDER CONTROL

Jamaica BBQ is pretty nasty
Posted on 22:08 by Unknown
Now this photo does not get anymore Jamaica Ghetto, than having a cook-out right next to garbage cans, trash on the ground and one shitty run down third world apartment building (love the screens on the stoop roof that have been there for about 3 years). All that is missing is a bunch of chickens running around...oh wait, they are now inside the grill.
Never mind the legality aspect of this (FDNY states that if you use a charcoal grill in a residential place it must be 10 feet away from a building or anything combustible (like garbage) and a hose connected to running water or a fire extinguisher must be present), this is just plain disgusting. What is next for these folks, dessert while sitting on the toilet taking a shit!
MAJOR GHETTO. And you wonder where stereotypes come from.
FYI, owner of the building at 89-15 170th St is………drum roll please…………………Baldev Singh. No big surprise there again.
Tell me again, what country do we live in?
