All was quiet in Bayside Queens on Monday. This is rare because residents like Cecilia Cody say it is normally filled with, “Noise torture, that’s what it is.”
Cody has lived here for the past thirty-five years. However, it was only until recently that her nightly ritual started requiring a soft touch to block out the sounds overhead, “I put in earplugs to go to sleep. This is what we are left to deal with, it’s simply horrendous.”
What she is referring to is the sound from airliners utilizing a “TNNIS 4″ climb out of LaGuardia’s Runway 13. On Monday, major carriers were making their ascents in the opposite direction.
However, ever since early 2012 there has been a dramatic uptick in traffic heading over Bayside Queens and the surrounding areas due to the FAA opting to utilize a flying procedure called “TNNIS 4″ climbs.
Assemblyman Ed Braunstein lives in the district and is trying to change the pattern that become more prevalent more than 18-months ago. According to Braunstein, on certain days the takeoffs begin early, “Starting at 6:00 a.m. you can set your watch to it. You’ll have a plane going off once a minute.”
FAA imagery shows what the “TNNIS 4″ climbs look like compared to the Whitestone and Flushing climb in side-by-side imaging. The trajectory of the “TNNIS 4″ Climb is much more concentrated and the repeated ascents more accurate. The pink area that completely covers the map in one section reflect the ascents that are right on top of one another.
The reason for this is due to RNAV equipped aircraft which has improved settings and navigation.
According to a report, this is about de-conflicting airspace.
Assemblyman Braunstein agrees, adding, “It’s really the flight traffic at JFK drives the flight traffic at LaGuardia.”
However, what Assemblyman Braunstein along with other politicians at the local, state, and federal level are hoping for, is that the FAA conducts a study utilizing monitors on the ground to identify if measures need to be taken regarding the aforementioned, “noise torture.”

The controversial statue, “Triumph of Civic Virtue,” is long gone from its perch on Queens Blvd. — but its noisy legacy remains.
Every eight minutes, the loud wail of bird screeches blares from an electronic device mounted at the statue’s former site — a poop-reduction system that has long outlived the structure it was designed to save.
“It's terrible this noise,” said Debra Mays, 50. “I walk here everyday after work and I am telling you, this is annoying.”
The News contacted the city to ask why the box is still operating nearly nine months after the statue was moved to Brooklyn’s Green-Wood Cemetery — prompting the Department of Citywide Administrative Services to say it would remove the device in the coming weeks.
Until then, the box will continue to emit two sounds — one inaudible to the human ear and another which is a random mix of birds of prey.

"After the city council's office of Queens read your blog piece about the noise created by the new long buses, and after additional prodding by a board president of a coop in Kew Gardens, and finally after CBS news appeared on the scene and threatened to run a story, the screeching buses traveling down Lefferts Blvd seem to have been replaced (or their brake systems repaired). The problem with these long, so-called "flexible" or "accordion-like" buses has thus mainly been resolved. Thanks to the intervention of Koslowitz's office, the media, and concerned citizens. It seems there is only one bus now that screeches somewhat, and the MTA should address that last bit of the problem, lest they receive continued complaints. Residents of a serene North Flushing block spent six weeks tracking down the elusive source of blaring music — and were shocked to find it across a river and more than a mile away.
Peter Condiles lives in the leafy section of Flushing north of downtown where lawns, driveways and carefully manicured bushes are the norm.
It was a quiet place to grow up and live.
“At least it use to be,” he said.
On May 11, Condiles was awakened by loud music pulsating through the walls of his home.
When the racket returned the following weekend, he began walking around the neighborhood, thinking someone might be throwing a party.
But the sound seemed to be playing tricks on him.
Main Street? Linden Place?
Just when the lifelong Flushing resident thought he had cornered the source of his sleepless nights, the sound would vanish.
Condiles had been in contact with another neighbor also seeking the source of the pumping bass, Flushing activist Paul Graziano, and the two spent several evenings driving around, ears tuned to the night air. They went as far as College Point Boulevard before they agreed the sound must be coming from farther away, across the Flushing River.
After another unsuccessful venture into Corona, on June 21 Condiles stumbled upon hundreds of people congregated in Willets Point, a gritty area of junk yards and auto shops across from Citi Field and more than 1 1/2 miles from his house.
“There were between three and five cars or vans. Each one had its trunk or back doors open and maybe 20 or 30 speakers on the doors,” he said. “They were all playing the same thing.”
Condiles and Graziano believe the combined amplification power of the souped-up speakers had sent sound waves bouncing across the Flushing River, off of building facades and into their quiet enclave — and they want the parties, which have been driving neighbors nuts, to stop.
Deputy Inspector Ronald Leyson, commanding officer at the 110th Precinct, said police had already driven the pop-up parties — which may be organized through social media — from around Meadow Lake inside Flushing Meadows Corona Park several months ago.
Now that they have migrated to Willets Point, the precinct has started to do patrols and issue summonses.
Last Friday, officers confiscated a car, he said.

At 4 a.m., the blaring beeping of backing up trucks is a rude awakening to residents living near the intersection of 14th Avenue and 130th Street in College Point, Queens.
"The kids are waking up and they say, 'Daddy we cannot sleep.' And I close the windows. It still doesn't help," says resident Turan Ates.
And it's not just the early rumblings of the trucks coming and going from TNP Trucking Company that have residents up in arms.
"The trucks are revving up all hours of the day and night and you just cannot sleep. It's as noisy as listening to this truck that just passed by," says resident Faneeza Alie.
Those living next to the trucking company claim the trucks idle for 30 minutes at a time creating a ton of noise and pollution. Residents says they've made countless complaint to the city, to no avail.
"The DEP, we calling them and they say they coming here, they can't find anything. I mean I can give you proof every time that they are idling," says Ates.
When NY1 called DEP, a spokesman told the station since 2011 there have been 86 complaints about the location. Seventy inspections were conducted there but no violations were issued since, according to the spokesman, no trucks were documented idling more than three minutes.
Still, neighbors say they have the time stamped video to prove the trucks are idling. NY1 called TNP Trucking Company but they had no comment. In the meantime, residents are pleading for the city to assist them with this serious quality of life issue.

...Comrie was also perched atop a motorcycle — albeit a parked one — outside Borough Hall for a campaign rally.
The lawmaker, while not a motorcyclist himself, earned the respect of other bikers after opposing a 2008 bill proposed by Vallone that would have regulated exhaust noise and allowed police to confiscate bikes after a certain number of infractions.
“Comrie, he was trying to help us fight it,” said Mark Brown, president of the Power Movez Motorcycle Club, where he is known by his nickname “Lunatic.”
“He would be a good borough president because he supports people,” Brown said, going beyond his support for Comrie by questioning Vallone’s riding credentials.
“I heard he just started,” Brown said. “There’s not much of a biker there if he tried to make a law against us and then learned how to ride.”
Vallone’s campaign said the lawmaker rode when he was younger, took a break and returned to the road about five years ago.
In the end, the councilman scrapped the proposed legislation anyway because he could not find a fair way to regulate the exhaust noise, which he said is excessive in some cases.
